Best value: Guerin

Guerin’s fleet of cheap cars is excellent, with basic but comfortable vehicles including a Peugeot 107 and Seat Ibiza available for around £130 for a week’ stay – even during busy popular periods of the year. Previous customers have also left consistently good reviews on the quality of their cars as well as the general level of service. And for extra convenience Guerin also offer access to a key-box for drop-offs, so you can bring your car back at any time of day.

Best for families: Europcar

Europcar claim to have the biggest fleet with the biggest variety of vehicles in Portugal – but it is their selection of large, family-sized cars that really caught the eye during our research. The Renault Megane Estate and the Ford Focus Estate – both providing exceptional boot space and passenger comfort – are ideal for those travelling with kids and the extra luggage that entails. Europcar offer a choice of daily, weekly, monthly, short and long term car hire.

Best for luxury cars: Hertz

Book at RentalCars.com

To experience Portugal’s southern coast in utmost style, you might want to consider upping the budget for a luxury car hire. Hertz offer a superb range of high-end sedans and sports cars, including the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the BMW 4-Series and the Ford Mustang Cabrio. For something truly extravagant, how about cruising along in a Porsche 911 Carrera? But be warned, this iconic car comes with a serious price tag. Hertz also have a policy of no cancellation or amendment fees and come with a best price guarantee, meaning they’ll refund the difference if you find a better rate for the same car.
