At an elevation of 6,035 feet (1,839m), Colorado Springs could already feel like it sits on a mountain top. But the numerous peaks that surround the city would suggest otherwise. Cliff dwellings, caves, rock formations and many miles of winding dirt tracks unlock these mountains and the best way to explore them is with a guide who is in the know. While this list brings you some excellent Jeep tours, we also offer up a few alternative forms of transportation that will also give you a unique Colorado Springs experience. Please note that some of these tours only run from May to October to avoid the snow.

Foothills and Garden of the Gods Jeep Tour

The Pike Peak area is among the finest regions of the Coloradan Rockies. On this 4×4 tour, you’ll spend time exploring the area’s best sights, both humanmade and natural. The former includes an old shortline railroad, where you’ll learn about the Wild West days in this area. The biggest draw is natural though, with Helen Hunt Waterfall and the red rocky formations in Garden of the Gods among the highlights. This tour lasts around 2.5 hours, departing from and returning to a central location in Colorado Springs. From $88 per person.

For a Jeep tour that heads off the paved road at the first opportunity and sticks to the dirt tracks that give you the best experience the Rocky Mountain wilderness, this may be the one for you. Wind up through, and above, the Pike National Forest, onto the open meadows above the tree line. Keep an eye out for fantastic wildlife, such as eagles, bears and deer, along the way. This tour often pushes on to an altitude of around 11,200 feet (3,414m). A minimum of two passengers is required. From $139 per person.

Garden of the Gods Segway Tour

If all you’re looking for is a taste of the open road as it snakes past the vast red rock formations, with the wind in your hair, then the Garden of Gods might do the trick. Taking a 90-minute Segway tour allows you to be out in nature without the noise and pollution of a regular vehicle. Although not as intrepid as a Jeep tour, you’ll get the full outdoor experience, complete with a tour guide who will point out revered rock formations such as the Kissing Camels. Keep your eyes out for wildlife too, with bighorn sheep and red-tailed hawks common sightings in this region. From $115 per person.
