East Midlands is a pleasant region of small market towns set amidst gently rolling countryside, between some smaller cities such as Leicester and Nottingham. The southern tip of the Pennines, a mountain range that stretches down from the North, is in East Midlands. The area is popular with hikers as it includes the Peak District National Park, which is well connected to cities like Sheffield and Manchester. The Peak District was England’s first national park, and is one of the largest in the country. Sherwood Forest is one of the best known Royal Forests for its association with Robin Hood. And, from shooting apples off heads to being hit in the head with a falling apple, Isaac Newton is one of the best known sons of the region.
