Capital city Belfast is one of the most exciting cities in the United Kingdom. Tours of the murals and neighbourhoods made infamous during less calm times are a must. Once an important centre for shipbuilding (the Titanic was constructed here), the city has more recently turned towards embracing culture and tourism. Other notable towns include Londonderry, which became the UK’s inaugural city of culture. Outside the cities the landscape is rich in variety. Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles. The Mountains of Mourne have been touted as Northern Ireland’s first national park and the geological wonder that is Giant’s Causeway is so spectacular that it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That is likely one of the main reasons why Northern Ireland was chosen as the main base for filming the famous Game of Thrones, locations of which can be visited.
