Because Greater London is just above it, South East is one of Britain’s most significant transport, tourism and cultural regions. Sea ports and train routes bring people from Europe while Heathrow and Gatwick airports are the South East’s gateway to the world. Home to many of London’s bigger satellite towns, it is also one of the more heavily populated regions of England. The South East is peppered with venerable towns steeped in history and significance, such as Oxford, Canterbury and former English capital city Winchester. Seaside glamour still exists along the pebble beaches of Brighton and Eastbourne or the White Cliffs of Dover. Wild ponies roam around New Forest National Park.
