At Cancun International Airport (CUN), travelers can choose from among eight on-site car rental companies. With so many choices, it can be tough to pick the right one. TravelMag.com has done all the research, examining each company to select the best pick in each of three categories: most affordable, best for families and top luxury options.
At CUN airport, car rental companies are in the Car Rental Center, located past customs just across from the baggage claim area in the airport terminal. Most car rental companies are housed here; however, off-site companies also serve CUN and drivers will meet travelers in the passenger pickup area.
Our car rental company search results
To determine recommendations for the best car rental companies at CUN, TravelMag.com compared rates, fleet availability, policies and user ratings of each of the eight on-site companies. Below are our findings in each of the three categories.
Most Affordable: Dollar
Best for families: Hertz
While not the least expensive of the family-friendly options at Cancun Airport, Hertz is a mid-priced choice that offers a range of amenities to families. Oversized vehicles, including the Chrysler Town & Country and Chevrolet Suburban, can fit everyone comfortably, and there’s plenty of room left over for their accompanying luggage. Smaller options, such as the Jeep Patriot and Dodge Journey, are nearly as spacious but at a fraction of the cost offered by competitors, including Avis. In fact, a week-long car rental in December was significantly less through Hertz than Avis for the same make and model. Hertz also guarantees infant, child and booster seats at its Cancun Airport location; for AAA members, one seat is free of charge. Otherwise, Hertz charges $12 per seat per day. In addition, Hertz is one of the top-rated car rental companies in Cancun, with users impressed by the cleanliness and overall condition of its vehicles.
Top Luxury Option: Avis
The selection of luxury vehicles may not be as expansive at CUN airport as it is in other major tourist destinations, but Avis does provide a few high-end options for those looking to cruise the Yucatan Peninsula in style. The notable offerings are the BMW 320i and BMW X3. Europcar was a close second, offering the Mercedes Benz A Class at a fraction of the cost, but Avis’ high ratings, especially with regards to vehicle condition and cleanliness, won out. Also making a mark on Cancun’s high-end rental car market is Mex, which offers convertibles and several premium options. However, its classification of the Kia Optima as a luxury car is questionable, though the low price point may make it worth trying out.
