Known for its colourful textiles, contemporary art, and popular nightlife and entertainment scenes, the Ghanian capital received a major tourism boost in recent years when it was dubbed “Africa’s capital of cool” by no less than the New York Times newspaper. And nothing exemplifies the city’s turn towards the trendy than its burgeoning bar and lounge scene. Here are 7 of the best that Accra has to offer.

Republic Bar and Grill

This bar is known for its lively and energetic atmosphere. It is one of Accra’s oldest and most popular bars and has even hosted some Hollywood celebrities and African superstars. It’s a popular spot for both locals and visitors who want to enjoy a mix of entertainment, music, and socializing. Nestled in central Osu, known as the West End of Accra, Republic stands out as one of Accra’s genuinely trendy bars. The bar has regular live music performances by international and local artistes alike. They serve some interesting signature cocktails such as their popular Kokoroko drink, alongside classical options, all made from cane spirit called “Akpeteshie”, a local equivalent of cachaca. The red walls adorned with black and white portraits of 20th Century music legends create a sleek yet evocative atmosphere. It also has an outdoor terrace that spills out into the street and is illuminated by charming fairy lights. The food menu has some nice local and international dishes reasonably priced between 40 and 65 Ghana Cedis. The cocktail prices are also within the same range.

Skybar is a rooftop bar at the Villagio Vista building, the tallest building in Ghana, directly across from the Accra Mall. It is known to be the best rooftop party destination in Accra. Skybar has a private and opulent ambiance with a breathtaking view of the city. This establishment encompasses a bar, restaurant, and rooftop pool, complete with a dance floor. Visitors are particularly enamored by the opportunity to witness stunning sunsets while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the bar. It’s important to note that the experience might come with a higher price tag. For those seeking the vibrant energy of Accra’s nightlife through rooftop parties, Skybar is a definite must-visit.

Also, located in Osu, this bar is one of the most popular spots in Accra. It’s a great place to go if you love fun and exciting crowds that fill up the inside and outside of the bar. It is a melting pot of the simple and sophisticated crowd with street vendors selling kebabs and people flowing out into the street. There’s a DJ and pool tables for patrons to be entertained. They have a popular cocktail called Five fingers which customers love despite the strong alcohol content. Their kitchen remains open throughout the night, offering a menu of fried chicken, rice, and yam chips. Cocktails here will cost you between 30 and 50 Ghana Cedis.

Due to its popularity, it’s highly recommended to make reservations in advance to secure your spot and if you’d like to avoid the weekend rush, then the best days to visit are between Tuesday and Thursday. The bar has good security and there’s always a great DJ providing great music till the wee hours of the morning. Their drinks menu offers pitchers and bowl drinks for about 100 Ghana Cedis so it is easy to share drinks as a group if that is your preference.
