Cosmopolitan and stylish, the port town of Gothenburg is one of those effortlessly trendy destinations, perfect for any time of year, filled as it is with cool cafés, well stocked art galleries, and old fashioned trams that still rattle along classical boulevards to and from the glistening sea.
It’s also crammed with excellent, well run, and very comfortable hotels. Granted, it’s not the cheapest city for accommodation, but with our tips you ought to be able to make the best of this slightly off-beat destination without breaking the bank.

Spar Hotel Gårda
From €105/ night
Close to Gothenburg Central Station, this modern hotel promises an affordable, relaxing stay. The staff are renowned for their friendliness and the beds for their comfort. There is a roof terrace with views out over the city and complimentary sauna access for guests. With a children’s playroom, it’s a great place from which to base a family vacation.

Spar Hotel Majorna
From €105/ night
It may not look like much from the outside, but the interior of this centrally located hotel is a monument to cleanliness and comfort. With loads of great cafés and restaurants just a short walk from its front doors (don’t hesitate to ask a member of staff), it’s a perfect launch pad for exploring the town, not to mention that it’s overflowing with facilities – gym, sauna, games room – within.

Good Morning+ Göteborg City
From €85/ night
All aboard this hotel with a difference. What’s the difference? It’s a boat, that’s what! Floating elegantly on Gothenburg’s quayside, Good Morning Göteborg is perfectly located for walks into town, not to mention that there are great views to be had from its sundeck. And lest you think its nautical form is the only thing going for it, shiver no timbers, with bright, modern rooms equipped with the full roster of expected facilities (TVs, showers, WiFi etc.), Good Morning Göteborg’s unusual casing is just the start of what it offers.

Linnéplatsens Hotell & Vandrarhem
From €63/ night
OK, so it’s technically a hostel, but it might as well be a hotel. Crammed – in a Scandinavian minimalist sense, we mean – with stylish features, and offering a level of comfort way in advance of the price you pay, this place in the heart of Gothenburg is one of the best value sites in town. The staff are friendly, and there are museums, city walks, and restaurants to be enjoyed just round the corner.

Best Western Plus Hotel Waterfront Göteborg
From €143/ night
It may be a touch pricier than the rest of our tips and not so close to Gothenburg centre, but this Best Western Plus, situated on the waterfront inside an old brewery is worth the stretch. The setting is almost worth the cost on its own, as you can relax and watch ships ply the stunning harbour. That you also happen to be in a marvellous building, filled with perfectly tailored luxury facilities is the proverbial icing on the cake. The kind of hotel that it’s difficult to leave!
