San Sebastian is full of beautiful architecture and stunning natural beauty. The best (and cheapest) way to get to know it is by hop-on hop-off bus.

With its picture postcard circular bay made of pristine golden sand beaches and a backdrop of mysterious hills and mountains, it’s easy to mistake San Sebastian for a millionaire island in the Caribbean. It is, however, a town in the Basque Country, 20km from the French border. It feels wonderfully exotic, with well-heeled inhabitants, unique cuisine and a vibrant Old Town that doesn’t seem to have changed much in decades. One of the best ways to get your bearings in San Sebastian is with a hop-on hop-off tour, meaning you can jump off and explore whenever the moment takes you. Here’s the best hop-on hop-off tours in San Sebastian.

San Sebastian: Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour Bus

San Sebastian has it all when it comes to architecture, from a Baroque basilica to Belle Époque buildings; it is the kind of place you can just explore for days. This tour is all about taking a step back and watching the beautiful scenery float by, the double decker open top bus gently cruising past almost everything worth seeing, whether it is the historic bridges across the Urumea River, panoramic views of the Bay of La Concha, the Parte Vieja, or Old Town, or the grandiose buildings of Constitution Square. The one-day ticket allows you to get on and off all day long while a complimentary guide and map contains all stops on the route to plan your visit. It’s incredibly good value too. From €12.

Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour Train

This cute little train is probably the best five bucks you can spend in San Sebastian. It’s sweet and a bit touristy but you do get to see a lot of the city, especially through the panoramic roofs in all the carriages. It sets off from heart of the historic city centre next to the Cantabrian sea, on Paseo de Salamanca, and passes the bay of La Concha , with views to Santa Clara Island, as well as Mount Urgull, the Miramar Palace, the Buen Pastor Cathedral, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, and more. Hop on and off at your leisure and there is an audio guide in eight languages. From €5.
