Phuket is more than just gorgeous beaches, wonderful food and dramatic scenery – there are some lovely golf courses too.

Think dreamy beach destinations in Thailand and there is a good chance an image of Phuket will come to mind. The biggest island in the Southeast Asian country, Phuket is home to a thousand postcard pictures, with dramatic rock formations sticking out of turquoise waters like ancient runes and white sandy beaches that stretch to the horizon. But while this island made its fame largely as an exotic getaway for those who still pined for their backpacking days, albeit without the mosquito-infested hostels and Mekhong hangovers, it is also now a globally renowned golf destination. That’s right, forget the dog-eared guide book and bring the 7 iron because Phuket has been busy, with the help of some top pros, creating some of the best, exotic golf courses you could ever dream of teeing off on. There is a great range of courses, from ocean-front holes that skirt the Andaman Sea coastline to picturesque inland greens surrounded by rocky landscapes and wild forests.

Red Mountain Golf Club

Red Mountain is one of Phuket’s best-known courses. Located in the heart of the island, this ,781-yard, par-72 course is simply stunning to look at, featuring tropical trees, flora and fauna, as well as well as remnants of the tin mining era, creating a mixture of natural and rugged beauty that makes it pretty unique. It’s challenging but not inhibiting for amateur golfers, with water hazards, narrow fairways, and sloping greens that demand focus, precision and accuracy. The contemporary clubhouse has a well-stocked pro shop, excellent locker rooms and a restaurant serving Thai and Western cuisine. Our tip is to retreat to the open-air terrace after a round to take in the sheer beauty of this to tier course. From €174.

Loch Palm Golf Club

Loch Palm is loved by locals and visitors alike for its beautifully designed 18-hole, par-72 course, covering 6,555 yards, adorned with diverse terrain, multiple water hazards and tranquil setting close to Phuket Town. If you think you have the measure of Loch Palm early on, beware. The course becomes more challenging toward the back nine, the landscape becoming more mountainous and forested, with downhill shots and undulating lines – the increase in complexity is rewarded with incredible views. The water-guarded green on the 15th hole is perhaps the ultimate challenge, with a 100ft elevation drop. Off the course, Loch Palm is just as tranquil, with excellent service and well thought through and modern amenities. From €143.

Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort

Mission Hills is a seafront, championship course created by none other than Nicklaus Design. With ocean views as a backdrop, Mission Hills features bunkers filled with white sand, not unlike the beaches that line the coastline, and lush green fairways. Beware – this can be challenging not least because the proximity to the sea can create more than a gust of wind to deal with, but accept the challenge and this Par 72, 6806 yards is an unforgettable experience. From €143.
