8 Florida Puerto Rican Kitchens Where the Mofongo Gets Mashed Garlicky and Piled High

Garlic hit the air before the plate even reached the table, and that smell told me everything I needed to know. Mofongo is mashed green plantain packed with garlic and crispy pork, then shaped into a mound and topped with shrimp, steak, or anything else the kitchen loves.

Across Florida, small Puerto Rican spots in strip malls, food trucks, and quiet corners are turning out versions that taste like a trip to the island. Here are eight kitchens worth a drive this weekend, each with its own reason to bring an appetite.

1. Dos Bocas Restaurant

Shrimp on top is expected. Shrimp hiding inside the mofongo too is the kind of surprise that turns a regular dinner into a story you tell later.

Dos Bocas sits along West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee, close to the theme park traffic but worlds away in spirit. The dining room feels cozy and festive, with live music, a pretty interior, and a staff that keeps things moving fast.

Families fit right in, with high chairs and a kids’ menu ready to go.

The mofongo comes topped with carne frita, churrasco, shrimp, and more, and the plating gets plenty of attention. Start with mini alcapurrias or cheese-stuffed sorullos, then save room for a whole fried chillo or tender pulpo if you are sharing.

Plan on roughly $20 to $30 per person. Saturday nights get lively, so a weekday visit is calmer, and the kitchen stays open until 10 PM most nights and 11 PM on weekends.

2. Grillers Puerto Rico Restaurant

Bring a friend, or bring a takeout box. The mofongo at Grillers is big enough that two people can comfortably dig into one order.

Over on the east side of Kissimmee, this upbeat spot mixes island classics with a playful twist: Puerto Rican sushi rolls share the menu with mofongo trios, stuffed flank steak, and chicken wrapped in bacon. The house garlic sauce is the move here, poured over the plantain mound until every bite tastes bold.

Options run wide, from Steak and Sea Mofongo to Mofongo Mar y Tierra and a version with dorado fish. Arroz con gandules, tostones de pana, and the Fritanguita sampler round things out nicely.

Weekends bring live music to the stage, so Friday and Saturday evenings fill up fast. Mornings are quiet, and the doors open at 11 AM daily.

3. 787 Mofongo

Named after Puerto Rico’s area code, this Orlando food truck wears its island pride right on the sign.

Find it on Narcoossee Road, where a laid-back setup with limited outdoor seating serves mofongo that stays moist and flavorful, finished with a garlic sauce worth chasing. The skirt steak mofongo is a favorite, and the Mofongo to Go option makes it easy to grab dinner on the way home.

Beyond the plantains, look for tripleta sandwiches, alcapurrias, fried pork chunks, and a conch cocktail. Homemade juices like acerola, parcha, and piña colada cool things down, and the tres leches cake is a sweet finish.

Prices land around $10 to $20, which feels like a bargain for the portions. Note that the truck closes Monday and Tuesday, has no restroom, and runs shorter Sunday hours.

4. Palermo Puerto Rican Kitchen

A big oak tree shades the parking lot, and somehow that sets the mood before you even open the door.

Palermo is a family-owned fixture in Orange Park, just south of Jacksonville, where the dining room feels snug, calm, and welcoming. The mofongo is mashed in house every day, and garlic lovers tend to call it a highlight of Northeast Florida.

Pair it with shrimp in garlic sauce or creole vegetables for a lighter take.

Want to go bigger? Try the trifongo, a blend of yuca, sweet plantain, and green plantain that brings a softer, slightly sweet balance.

The menu also covers skirt steak, stuffed chicken breast, roast pork, whole fried snapper, and a Cuban sandwich. A virgin piña colada and tres leches cake make a nice ending, and reservations are accepted, which helps on busy Saturday evenings.

5. EL BAYU DE WELA SARA

Crispy outside, soft and garlicky inside. That contrast is what great mofongo is supposed to deliver, and this Hollywood kitchen nails it.

Wela means grandma in Puerto Rican slang, and the bright, colorful dining room on Hollywood Boulevard feels like a family home. Stuffed mofongo is the specialty, with churrasco and pernil encebollado among the standouts.

Octopus salad and chuleta kan kan, a dramatic fried pork chop with its crackling still attached, are also worth a look.

Plant-based eaters get real choices here, thanks to a full vegan menu that includes a vegan pastel and bacalaitos. Mofongo bites make a fun starter for the table.

Saturdays bring live music, and dogs are welcome outside. Expect $20 to $60 per person, paid parking nearby, and a Tuesday closure.

6. La Empanada Loca

Dry mofongo is a real problem in some kitchens. At La Empanada Loca, a cup of flavorful broth arrives alongside, the traditional island way to keep each bite moist.

Fun fact: that broth trick is common in Puerto Rico, yet many mainland spots skip it. This small, cozy room on North Dixie Highway in Oakland Park keeps the tradition alive.

Order the mofongo with shrimp in garlic sauce, steak, or pernil, and it comes out hot and perfectly done. The rest of the menu leans homestyle, with chuleta kan kan, sancocho, pollo guisado, jibaritos, and bacalaitos.

And yes, the empanadas earn their name.

Service is quick and friendly, and curbside pickup makes takeout simple. Hours wrap up early, around 7:30 PM most weekdays and 5:30 PM on Sunday, so plan lunch or an early dinner.

7. El Bori Food Truck

Late-night cravings in Miami have a new answer. El Bori serves until 12:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, right near the Wynwood art district.

The mofongo here is garlicky, juicy, and loaded with chunks of chicharrón, and portions come generous. Toppings like shrimp, steak, or crispy chicken chicharrón keep things interesting, and the truck adds fun street food spins too.

Not in the mood for plantains? Try the tripleta sandwich, carne frita with tostones, sorullitos de maíz, or loaded tripleta fries.

The empanadas come crispy and fresh, and buying five gets you one free.

Plates run about $10 to $20, with outdoor seating and speedy service. The truck opens in the evenings only and closes Monday and Tuesday.

8. TRES PALMAS LATÍN FOOD / SABOR 100% PUERTORRIQUEÑO 🇵🇷

Garlic cream sauce, and lots of it. Tres Palmas does not hold back, and that generous pour is exactly why this Clearwater spot closes out the list.

Run with care by a friendly couple, the casual family restaurant on Ulmerton Road serves a house Tres Palmas mofongo that is moist, creamy, and loaded with garlic and onion. Portions are hearty, and prices stay friendly at roughly $10 to $20 per person.

Chicharrón and churrasco are crowd favorites, and the supreme nachos are built for sharing, piled with grilled chicken, churrasco steak, and sausage.

Timing matters here. The kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday only, closing at 7 PM midweek and 8 PM on Friday and Saturday, so a lunch run on a Gulf Coast day trip works beautifully.
