The Top 10 Seafood Spots In Topeka, Kansas That Serve Massive Portions

A single lobster roll in Kansas packs a full third of a pound of lobster meat, with no filler hiding inside. I had to read that sentence twice.

The same kitchen also serves a half-pound seafood roll stuffed with lobster, pollock, and snow crab.

Elsewhere in the capital city, one buffet rolls out all-you-can-eat crab legs on weekend nights. Another spot sells sushi platters with a whopping 100 pieces.

Honestly, that’s a lot of ocean for a state hundreds of miles from the nearest beach. I really love that this city refuses to let geography decide what lands on the plate.

So I went looking for the biggest seafood plates around town.

Some come from food trucks, some from Mexican kitchens, and one comes from a supper club with roots in the 1940s.

How much shrimp can one hungry table really handle?

1. DJ’s Diner & Food Truck

A third of a pound of lobster in one roll sounds like a typo in Kansas.

It isn’t, and the folks behind this New England kitchen seem pretty proud of that fact.

Daniel Berthiaume and Jessica Brockstedt founded DJ’s to bring East Coast classics to the middle of the country. They’ve been at it for more than five years now.

The star is the Epic New England Lobster Roll. You get a full third-pound of lobster meat with no filler, seasoned with salt, pepper, lemon, and a touch of mayo on a grilled bun.

Want something different? The Maine Seafood Roll also weighs in at a third of a pound and mixes lobster, Alaskan pollock, and snow crab.

Fried food fans have plenty to chase too. The Boston Sampler piles fried cod, clam strips, shrimp, and calamari sticks together, so you don’t have to pick just one.

You’ll also spot fried oysters, a Boston Clam Roll, a Rhode Island Roll, and a half-pound fish sandwich at some events. That’s a lot of coastline packed into one menu.

Plan ahead, since the business closes on Mondays. Besides the truck, you can also find a diner counter inside the West Ridge Mall food court.

2. Alebrijes Marisqueria

Breakfast at 6 a.m. and seafood until 2 a.m. on weekends?

That schedule alone tells you this kitchen means business.

Alebrijes is a seafood-focused Mexican restaurant, and mariscos frescos sit right at the heart of the menu. You’ll find made-to-order ceviche, oysters, and fried fish.

Here’s a fun twist for your fried fish. You can pair it with plantains and cheese, which sounds like a sweet and salty win.

The Fish Tacos come three to an order. Each one holds breaded tilapia, pico de gallo, cabbage, creamy chipotle sauce, and avocado.

Got a crowd to feed? The restaurant says it can handle large orders for groups and catering, so your next party could be a ceviche party.

Fridays bring Latin music and a lively mood to the dining room. It’s also family-friendly, so the kids can tag along for tacos.

Hours shift around a bit, so check before you go. Tuesday hours run until 9 p.m., while Friday and Saturday run late into the night, closing at 2 a.m.

The entrance is wheelchair accessible too. That makes it easier for the whole family to grab a seat and start passing plates around.

Address: 1116 SE 6th Street, Topeka, KS 66607

3. El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant and Marisqueria

Few dinners arrive in a volcanic stone bowl, but the Molcajete here does exactly that.

It’s a hearty Mexican stew that could double as a table centerpiece.

Inside, you’ll find steak, chicken, shrimp, nopal, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes in a special Mexican broth. Rice, beans, guacamole salad, and three tortillas ride along on the side.

Seafood lovers have a long list to explore. Think Caldo de Camaron, Camarones al Mojo de Ajo, Camarones a la Diabla, and seafood enchiladas.

For a showstopper, order the Mojarra. That’s a whole fried tilapia, and it makes quite an entrance.

The Fajita Del Mar brings shrimp, scallops, and fish to one sizzling platter. If that still sounds small, the Fajitas Double and Parrillada options are built for big appetites.

El Ranchito is known for generous portions, and its Lenten seafood menu is pitched as perfect for large families. So round up the cousins.

One more treat deserves a shout. A mobile guacamole cart rolls up so fresh guac can be made right at your table.

Doors open daily at 11 a.m., with closing at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 p.m.

Friday and Saturday. That gives you plenty of chances to try the whole seafood lineup.

4. 785 Kitchen

Naming your restaurant after the local area code is a bold flex.

Chef and owner LaVale Jackson clearly wanted folks to know this soul food spot belongs to the neighborhood.

785 Kitchen opened in 2022 and quickly earned a reputation for generous portions. The homemade taste is a big part of the draw.

Catfish is the headliner on the seafood side. The fillets get a cornmeal coating and are made from scratch.

One plate brings two catfish fillets plus a side, with cornbread or a roll. That’s a serious lunch before you even think about dessert.

Prefer a sandwich? You can get a single large fillet tucked between bread, which sounds like the easiest way to eat a big fish with your hands.

Fish isn’t the only option from the water. The menu also mentions Cajun-seasoned fish, grilled shrimp, shrimp alfredo, and salmon alfredo.

A recent post from the restaurant even teased colossal shrimp. With a name like that, small plates don’t seem to be part of the plan.

Published listings show the restaurant serving customers Monday through Saturday, with shorter hours on Sunday. Exact hours vary between listings, so check before visiting.

You can dine in or grab takeout.

5. Joy Wok Super Buffet & Hibachi

All-you-can-eat crab legs in Kansas might be the most beautiful phrase in the English language.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, Joy Wok makes it a reality.

The weekend buffet is where seafood fans really cash in. Alongside the crab legs, you’ll find clams and shrimp done several different ways.

How many ways, you ask? Cold boiled, grilled, butterflied, and scampi-style, so you can build a little shrimp tasting tour on one plate.

The buffet covers Chinese, Japanese, and hibachi dishes. Fresh sushi and pho also show up, which means your second plate can look nothing like your first.

Customers often point out the generous selection and satisfying portions. At a buffet, the portion size really depends on how brave you feel.

A smart move is to pace yourself. Start with a few crab legs, take a break, and then decide if round three is calling.

Hours run 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. most days, with later closing at 10:15 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Dine-in, takeout, and delivery are all available.

Just remember the crab is a weekend night thing. Plan your craving around that schedule.

6. Yuki Restaurant of Japan

A sushi boat loaded with rolls, nigiri, and sashimi is less of a meal and more of an event.

Yuki makes that possible with its Sushi Love Boat selections.

The name means snow in Japanese, which feels fitting for a place that can bury a table in fish. The menu covers sushi, sashimi, and teppanyaki.

Hosting a crowd? The Sushi Love Boat comes in small, medium, and large options.

The large version includes three rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and an appetizer.

Smaller versions offer the same combination with fewer rolls, making them an option for couples or families who want to share several dishes.

Eating solo is still an option, and you won’t leave hungry. The Sashimi Dinner includes 18 pieces, and a smaller 10-piece sashimi sampler is available too.

Roll lovers can pick from choices like the L.A. Roll, Spider Roll, and California Roll.

The restaurant puts an emphasis on freshness, using quality ingredients and house-made sauces to bring Japanese flavors to the table.

Timing matters here. Weekdays start at 4:30 p.m., while Saturday opens at 11:30 a.m.

Sunday opening times vary across published listings, so check before visiting.

Delivery, takeout, and dine-in are all on the table. A Sushi Love Boat at home might be the best movie night upgrade in town.

7. HuHot Mongolian Grill

At HuHot, you’re the chef, and nobody will judge how tall you stack your bowl.

The whole idea is unlimited stir-fry built your way.

You start at a fresh market of ingredients. Pick your meats, seafood, noodles, and vegetables, then splash on Asian-inspired sauces.

Seafood shows up as part of the build-your-own spread. Lunch usually offers two seafood choices, while dinner often brings three or four.

That means dinner is your best bet for a seafood-heavy bowl. Load up on shrimp or whatever ocean option is out that night.

Since the stir-fry is unlimited, portion size is really up to you. Your first bowl can be a test run, and your second can be the masterpiece.

Sauce mixing is half the fun. Try a mild combo first, then get braver on the next trip once you know what you like.

The Topeka location opens at 11 a.m. daily. Sunday through Thursday, it closes at 9 p.m., while Friday and Saturday hours extend until 10 p.m.

Carry out, pickup, and delivery are offered, though online ordering may be unavailable on weekends. Dining in still gives you the full grill experience.

8. Jorge’s Cantina

A dish called the Burrito Loco had better be a little wild.

This one stuffs a large flour tortilla with grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, rice, and beans before topping it with cheese and red sauce.

Jorge’s has an expansive menu that’s popular with big groups. The seafood section alone could keep you busy for months.

The Seafood Fajita is a true platter. Shrimp, scallops, tilapia, and imitation crab sizzle with bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes.

Rice, beans, guacamole salad, sour cream, and tortillas round it out. You might need a second chair just for the sides.

Want something that stares back? The Mojarra is a whole fried tilapia served with rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, sliced avocado, and tortillas.

The list keeps going with Caldo Camaron, Camarones a la Diabla, ceviche, and shrimp cocktail. There’s also Filete de Pescado y Camarones, which pairs tilapia with grilled shrimp.

Shrimp Nachos Fajita is a smart pick for sharing. Set it in the middle and watch it vanish.

Spicy food fans should eye anything labeled a la Diabla. Calmer palates can stick with the garlic shrimp, known on the menu as Camarones al Mojo de Ajo.

9. North Star Steakhouse

A menu that has reportedly stayed the same since 1942 is either stubborn or brilliant.

At North Star, it seems to be a little of both.

The restaurant started as the North Star Supper Club in the 1940s. Today it sits in a rustic, lodge-style setting with plenty of old Kansas character.

Yes, it’s a steakhouse, but the catfish deserves your attention. North Star serves American farm-raised catfish, and reviewers mention having plenty of leftovers.

Part of the reason is the parade of extras. Meals come with rolls, salad, and family-style sides.

Those sides include fresh cut fries, hash browns, gravy, baked potato, and broccoli. Passing bowls around the table feels like Sunday dinner at a relative’s house.

If someone in your group wants beef, the Steak for Two is a 32-ounce hand-cut sirloin. That’s one way to keep the whole table quiet for a while.

The head cook has reportedly been there since 1979. That kind of staying power says a lot about a kitchen.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and reservations are suggested.

Sundays and Mondays are closed, so plan your catfish night carefully.

10. Long John Silver’s

Sometimes the biggest seafood haul comes through a drive-thru.

Long John Silver’s builds whole meals around feeding a crowd at once.

The Fish and Shrimp Family Feast is the heavyweight here. It brings eight pieces of fish or chicken, twelve shrimp, two family-size sides, and eight hushpuppies.

That spread is pitched for three to four adults. It’s a solid move for a busy weeknight when nobody wants to cook.

Smaller families have options too. The 12 Piece and 8 Piece Family Meals let you scale up or down.

Eating solo but still hungry? Platters like the Fish, Chicken and Shrimp Platter or the Super Sampler Platter combine several pieces with sides.

Popcorn shrimp and clam strips make easy snacks for the car ride home. Just don’t expect the hushpuppies to survive the trip untouched.

Not in the mood for fried? Grilled Salmon and Grilled Shrimp meals give you a lighter path.

Hours run daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. That makes it an easy last stop on a seafood tour of the capital city, proof that a big ocean feast can happen anywhere, even in the middle of the map.
