Pisa and Lucca lie 20km apart in the north west of Tuscany – the former famous for its iconic Leaning Tower, the latter an easy-going Medieval town boasting charming piazzas and impressive walls. All around, the countryside spans both hilly and seaside areas, offering a diverse range of landscapes and natural attractions. These farm stays are perfectly suited to those looking for a peaceful retreat not far from the region’s main towns.
Agriturismo Sardi Giustiniani
Hailing from a long-established family business, Fattoria Sardi is run by a young couple producing wine through organic grapes and sustainable methods. Unusually for Tuscany, the core of the production is rosé wines, which enjoy the favourable influence of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea. Reds and whites are also produced, and the whole range can be discovered while visiting the cellar. The agriturismo offers seven apartments sleeping up to six people, located next to a swimming pool and surrounded by woods, olive trees, meadows and farmland. Agriturismo Sardi Giustiniani is 5km away from Lucca and 40km from the nearest beach.
Agrituristica del Lungomonte
This agricultural cooperative offers all one needs for a rural stay on the slopes near Pisa. It is formed by three repurposed farmhouses, each providing rooms and communal spaces where guests can relax or cook. A swimming pool and a wood oven are available, while the restaurant serves a seasonal menu centred around typical Tuscan dishes. The cooperative is part of the local ‘oil route’, and its signature products include olive oil and an amaro digestive. Cultural tours and horse riding are some of the activities available.
Al Podere di Rosa
Al Podere di Rosa offers genuine rural hospitality where simple pleasures are key. The farm has been in the current owner’s family for around a hundred years, when his great-grandfather bought the property on his return from working in a San Francisco ranch. Recently opened, the agriturismo offers seven rooms as well as communal areas such as a kitchen and a reading room. The surrounding countryside is ideal for quiet wanders among woodland, farms and ancient villas. In keeping with the family tradition, the farm produces wine, olive oil and vegetables.
Agriturismo La Pisana sits at the foot of the Pisan Mountains, in open countryside yet just outside town. A sophisticated rural style features throughout the property, which offers a range of double and twin rooms (convertible to triple or quadruple). The buffet breakfast focuses on homemade cakes made following closely-kept family recipes. Cereal, fruit, vegetables and olive oil are also produced in-house. The communal spaces include ping pong, a children’s area, a swimming pool and a small bocce court. Local cheeses and salumi are available in summer or upon request.
Agriturismo Casa Rosa
