While Boston is generally known as a walkable city that’s augmented by excellent public transport links, you still can’t beat the practical benefits of having access to your own vehicle. There are several rental car agencies located around Boston where you’ll find cheap deals that maximise  your independence without hitting you hard in the pocket. We’ve picked out three of them, based in specific areas of the city.

Boston Logan International Airport: Thrifty

For those travelling to Boston via the city’s main international airport, there’s a 24-hour Rental Car Center featuring 11 companies located directly at the arrivals terminal, as well as a separate facility that can be reached via shuttle bus. For the best value agency, we’ve picked out Thrifty, whose agency are located in the terminal for maximum convenience. Here they offer a wide number of economy cars at reasonable rates, including a Ford Fiesta available for $287 per week and a Chevrolet Spark for just a few dollars more.

Cambridge: Hertz

Separated from Boston by just over 3 miles and connected by the Harvard Bridge, the city of Cambridge is most famous for being home to the prestigious Harvard University. If you’re basing yourself in Cambridge, or are perhaps planning a day trip here from Boston, you might want to consider hiring a car. The upside is that If you rent a car directly in the city then rates tend to be slightly lower than in Boston. Our top pick for rental agencies in Cambridge is Hertz, where a Hyundai Veloster, available for $277 per week, is among the most attractive deals we found.
