Scots are known for their hospitality and Edinburgh is a prime example of this: a lively city where visitors receive a warm welcome, sometimes accompanied by a dram of whisky. The city offers something for everyone: art lovers, hikers, sports fans and comedy enthusiasts certainly won’t be short of things to do outside of their English classes. A diverse range of language schools offer English courses at all levels, over different periods and that fit with students’ schedules – and we’ve selected some of the best below.

Located in Edinburgh’s bustling West End, this language school’s central location makes it easily accessible, with bus and tram stops directly outside. Classes are kept to a maximum of ten students per lesson to ensure maximum personalised attention. The school has a relaxed atmosphere, with lessons taught by experienced teachers. There are three types of English programme: general, business and exam preparation. Extracurricular activities offered include city tours, art exhibitions, whisky tasting and many more. Inlingua is also able to assist students with accommodation in English-speaking homestays.

Simply English Edinburgh

Renowned for its flexible study programmes that let students select how many hours per week they study, and at a time that suits their schedule, Simply English is one of Edinburgh’s most reputable language schools. Giving students both linguistic and cultural knowledge by immersing them in Scottish culture, the school’s programmed events include trips, games afternoons, book, film and conversation clubs, and more. Outside of scheduled lessons, Simply English offers free 30-minute workshops every week for students enrolled in over five hours of classes. The school also helps open bank accounts, reviews CVs and assists with work experience placements.

Mackenzie School of English

Established in 2008, this school is accredited by the British Council. Located in a former church, it is architecturally stunning from the outside, balanced with modern facilities and a contemporary feel on the inside. The school offers English language courses to both adults and young learners, with lessons delivered by fully-qualified teachers. Classes take place in the morning and afternoon, allowing students to select times that suit them best. Year-round programmes are available, as well as summer courses. The school also supports students in arranging accommodation, with options including homestays, shared student accommodation or rooms in a B&B or hotel.
