Although public transport in Malta is pretty efficient, hiring a car can be a much more convenient choice. Whether you want to visit Valletta’s medieval monuments, dive into Comino’s Blue Lagoon or take a trip to medieval Mdina, a cheap care hire will help get you there with speed and comfort. Airport car hire at Malta Airport is quick and convenient, with most of the nine companies based inside the arrivals lounge in the main airport terminal. Cheap Malta car hire companies include Avis and Europcar, which offer a wide selection of vehicles at competitive prices. If you’ve booked in advance all you need to do is turn up and present your driver’s licence, a credit or debit card and one form of ID.

Best value: Avis

Book at RentalCars.com

After running several searches across different dates and lengths of stay, we found that Avis offer the cheapest and best value car hire at Malta Airport. Customer reviews are good too, but it is the choice of cars that sets Avas apart from their competitors, with over six car brands represented in the small car range. As for pricing, a week’s stay came in at around £100 with Avis, which few other companies could match. Be aware, drivers under the age of 25 might have to pay a bit more, through daily rates with Avis rarely crept above the £20 mark, making them the best choice for sheer value for money.

Best for families: Sixt

Book at RentalCars.com

Sixt’s rental desk at Malta Airport offers a superb selection of large cars that are ideal for families travelling with little ones. Children and baby’s seats are also provided for an extra charge, and are all approved to European safety standards. The one downside to Sixt is that their rental desk is only open from 10am to 5pm, meaning that those arriving on evening flights will not be able to pick up their car on arrival. However, for choice, pricing and overall service, Sixt are our pick for families.

Best for luxury cars: First Car Rental

We must admit, when it comes to luxury cars for hire at Malta Airport, the choice is not particularly inspiring. However, on balance, we found that First Car Rental had the best reviews and so we would suggest you go with them. If you’re a BMW fan, you’ll also be pleased to know that both the 3 Series and 5 Series feature in their fleet. And if you change your mind, or find a better deal at the last minute, free cancellation is available up to 48 hours before pick-up.
