North Lake Tahoe is a place of dual identity. Spliced right down the centre by the state line, both California and Nevada stake a claim to this glacial-carved lake. Nevada’s slice is the livelier and louder of the two and home to two raucous casinos, Crystal Bay and Stateline. Just two hours from Sacramento, Californians see North Lake Tahoe as their mountain playground, with ample dining and nightlife, summertime swimming and wintertime snow play. Given its popularity both sides of the border, there are hundreds of vacation rentals to choose from. We’ve scoured the internet for three of the best vacation rental providers based on affordability, range of properties, facilities, ease of use and customer reviews.

VRBO

For the most affordable range of vacation rentals in North Lake Tahoe, look to  VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner). The site offers a wide range of waterfront properties ranging from log homes to upscale townhouses. For instance, we found a cabin that sleeps six for just $80 per night. You can filter by price, rating, number of bedrooms and facilities, as well as specific rules such as smoke-free homes and pet-free homes. All properties, except newly listed rentals, are reviewed out of five too. Listings are informative and full of pictures. They also offer ultra-specific details about the cancellation policy, which is stricter than most booking platforms.

Booking.com

When it comes to vacation rentals, Booking.com is usually most holidaymakers first port of call. The site offers the largest range of properties on the internet; at the time of writing there were over 1,000 properties listed in the area. Prices cater for both cash-strapped and big spenders, with properties ranging from private rooms in guest houses to sprawling manor houses. You can sort by “Top Reviewed and “Stars” and filter by property type, amenities, facilities and accessibility. There’s also a new filter that allows you to select properties with a “Travel Sustainable Badge”, an industry first that acknowledges a combination of sustainable practices that meet the platform’s impact threshold.

Plum Guide

Plum Guide offers a far smaller selection of properties, but the emphasis here is really on quality over quantity. Unlike other accommodation platform providers, Plum Guide only features properties that have been nominated and selected after a multi-vetting process. With such dedication to curation, you can guarantee that none of these properties will fall below expectations. Prices are hight than the other entries on this list, but ideal for those looking for an upmarket stay. You can filter properties by number of bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as ultra-specific amenities like hot tubs and rain showers. All properties are price matched too, so while they may cater for higher budgets, they also offer the best deals on the web.
