It may not be as well-known as its Australian namesake, but Florida’s Melbourne has enough appeal in its own right to attract a steady stream of visitors throughout the year. Within reach of major tourist hotspots including Miami and Fort Lauderdale to the south and Daytona Beach to the north, it is also a popular base from which to explore the rest of this enticing stretch of Florida’s eastern coastline. For attractions and activities in and around the city itself, here are 7 unique tips.

Explore a wildlife-rich lagoon

One of the world’s most biologically diverse ecosystems, the Indian River Lagoon makes for a memorable excursion from Melbourne. From water sports and boating to fishing and wildlife viewing, the lagoon offers a huge array of opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure. Among the biggest highlights is the 2,000-strong dolphin population that resides in the lagoon’s waters, with a number of dolphin-watching boat tours available that depart from Melbourne, offering visitors the chance to get up close and personal with these captivating marine creatures.

Spend a day at the zoo

For an animal experience on dry land, Melbourne is also home to an acclaimed zoo. Situated a 20-minute drive north of the city centre, Brevard Zoo features more than 800 animals hailing from across Florida, as well as South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Among the most notable residents are rhinos, big cats and hundreds of colourful parrots, while visitors can also book interactive experiences including giraffe and bird feeding, and guided kayaking tours on a small lagoon.

Take a stroll around historic downtown

The historic and commercial heart of the city, Downtown Melbourne is a delight to explore. Sprinkled with palm tree-lined sidewalks, charming 19th century architecture, and an eclectic range of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, the neighbourhood is a perpetual hum of activity. In its southeastern corner, visitors can enjoy respite from the hustle and bustle by taking in picturesque views of the water from the Crane Creek Promenade. Another highlight is the eye-catching murals that brighten up the walls and building façades throughout the district.

Embark on a fishing adventure

The Atlantic waters off the coast of Melbourne are a haven for anglers, with several renowned fishing hot spots dotted throughout the estuary. While it is perfectly possible to fish independently at many of them, there are a number of organised fishing charters on offer which will see you head out to sea and cast your line in the company of an experienced captain and guide. Tours cater for everyone from absolute beginners to expert anglers, with the experience tailored to your skill level. Both group and private tours are available.

Head to a local beach

As with the entire stretch of coastline, Melbourne provides easy access to some of the best beaches in the region. Accessible through nearby boat ramps and channels, Melbourne Beach offers gentle waters that are ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and paddle boarding. Boaters also flock here to immerse themselves in the unspoiled coastal landscapes, with abundant coastal vegetation adding to the idyllic scenery. The beach is also a favoured spot for surf fishing, with opportunities to catch snook, redfish, whiting, and pompano.

Test your mettle at an action-packed theme park

For families visiting Melbourne, there’s no more assured way of lighting up your little ones’ eyes than suggesting a trip to an amusement park. Situated a couple of miles south of downtown, Andretti Thrill Park is jam-packed full of thrilling rides and activities that will keep kids entertained for hours – if not days – on end,  including a spinning roller-coaster, multiple go-kart tracks, paddle boating, batting cages, a ropes course, mini golf, a climbing wall, laser tag and arcade games.
