Much like the North West, the southern section of Yorkshire & the Humber is home to a number of large cities such as Sheffield, Bradford and Leeds. York’s historic city walls house the remnants of an ancient settlement that was once the most strategically important in all of northern England. Dating back to the fourteenth century, The Shambles is one of Britain’s best preserved medieval streets. Other buildings date back much further to Roman times. North Yorkshire, on the other hand, has some of the remotest land in the country. From the sprawling Yorkshire Dales across to the North York Moors on the east coast is a vast region of sparse beauty that gave the Brontë sisters the perfect setting for Gothic novels such as Wuthering Heights.
