Famous today for many of the wrong reasons, Bavaria’s second largest city is far more than its relationship with the Nazis. The effective capital of the Holy Roman Empire for much of its history, the town has been a centre of European culture for centuries, and of course it’s also a heaven of traditional south German delights with beer halls and Christmas markets as good as anywhere in the world.
