Skip The Lake Erie Crowds At These 12 Ohio Seafood Spots Locals Actually Love

One Ohio fish counter sells fried smelt, a little fish about the size of a clam strip. That alone made me want to map out every serious seafood stop far from the lake.

The search got stranger and better fast. I found a crab boil spot that also serves Vietnamese pho.

I found a downtown room trimmed in antique mahogany and red velvet, with oysters on the half shell.

None of these places sit on the Lake Erie shoreline. They’re in strip malls, old downtown buildings, and quiet stretches of state highway across Ohio.

That means shorter drives for a lot of us, and maybe fewer elbows at the table.

I’d happily plan a whole weekend around a few of them. So which one sounds like your next road trip excuse?

1. Jay’s Seafood

Antique mahogany and red velvet set a stately tone before the menu even arrives. Downtown Dayton keeps this classic seafood room on East 6th Street.

Start with Blue Point oysters on the half shell or a cup of clam chowder. Then weigh the Fisherman’s Platter against the Lobster Platter, which is a pleasant problem to have.

The cedar plank salmon gets plenty of attention here. Salmon en croute and linguine al frutti di mare round out the fancier side of the menu.

There’s a raw bar, a private dining room, and dessert worth saving room for. Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially on Saturday evenings.

Hours run Wednesday through Sunday evenings. So plan your craving accordingly, because Monday and Tuesday are off the table.

Address: 225 E 6th St, Dayton, OH 45402

Some dining rooms feel like they could tell stories, and this oak-paneled one in downtown Canton fits that bill. It’s a longtime seafood specialist that also handles steaks and chops.

The menu leans classic in the best way. Look for crab stuffed flounder, Boston scrod, and a two-tail lobster dinner.

Fish fans can also find grouper, swordfish, and seared rare yellowfin tuna with a light Cajun touch. A smoked duck appetizer offers a curveball before the main event.

When the weather cooperates, there’s an outdoor patio. Lunch runs Tuesday through Saturday, while Monday is dinner only.

It’s an easy pick for a slower, sit-down Ohio meal. Bring someone who appreciates old buildings and good fish.

Address: 137 Court Ave SW, Canton, OH 44702

A strip mall on Beechmont Avenue is not where most people expect island energy. Yet that’s exactly the kitschy, laid-back mood here on Cincinnati’s east side.

The menu covers seafood, salads, and pasta without fuss. Lobster fritters, gumbo, and lobster bisque make strong opening moves.

Grilled mesquite grouper shows up as a Caesar salad topper. Charbroiled oysters, fried oysters, and coconut shrimp keep the fryer and grill busy.

Soft shell crab and yellowfin tuna appear too, along with simple shrimp baskets. There’s a kids’ menu, so the whole crew can come along.

Outdoor seating is available when the Ohio River valley warms up. Weekends open earlier, starting at noon.

Seared scallops and crab legs headline the bigger plates. Fried green tomatoes add a Southern-leaning side option.

Save room for the buttermilk creme brulee. It’s one of the menu’s sweetest reasons to linger.
