7 North Carolina Old-Fashioned Soda Fountains Where The Milkshakes Still Get Spun At The Counter

A metal mixing cup set down beside my glass, still frosty and half full, was the moment I knew I had found something special in North Carolina. I had only stopped for a quick bite, but that extra pour of chocolate shake turned a plain afternoon into a memory.

All across the state, old-fashioned soda fountains are still spinning shakes right at the counter, the same way they did for our grandparents. Grab a stool, because these seven spots prove the past still tastes pretty sweet.

1. S & T’s Soda Shoppe, Pittsboro, NC

Bring an appetite, and maybe a friend, because the Monster Banana Split here lives up to its name. S and T’s Soda Shoppe sits in a historic storefront on Hillsboro Street in Pittsboro, a charming county seat in the Piedmont.

Step inside and a jukebox, antique furniture, and vintage fountain decor set the mood right away.

Shakes and malts are made fresh, old-fashioned style, then poured into classic glasses. The best part is that the whole mixer cup comes along too, so you get a bonus round.

Steve’s Super Shakes are a house favorite, and egg creams, a Cherry Smash, and a Cola Sundae keep the fountain menu playful.

Hungry for more than dessert? The Pimento Cheese Burger brings a true Southern twist, and there are more than 30 rotating ice cream flavors to try afterward.

The shop opens Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 7:30 PM, and Saturday afternoons get lively, so a weekday visit means more elbow room at the counter.

2. Mike’s On Main, Hendersonville, NC

Long before anyone ordered a banana split here, folks came in for remedies. Mike’s On Main fills a 100-year-old former apothecary on Hendersonville’s walkable Main Street, and the building still carries that wonderful old-timey character.

Oldies from the 1950s float through the room while the fountain hums along.

The shake and ice cream counter turns out milkshakes that are thick, creamy, and seriously chocolatey. Pair one with breakfast favorites like eggs Benedict or French toast, or go for lunch with the chicken salad sandwich served alongside fruit.

Kids get their own menu, which makes it easy for families on a mountain getaway.

Timing matters on this stretch of downtown. Summer weekends get packed, and parking can take some patience, so arrive early in the day.

Doors open at 8 AM most days, making it a sweet first stop before strolling the shops or heading out to see apple country in fall.

3. Soda Fountain, Asheville, NC

Art galleries and milkshakes under one roof? Only in Asheville.

The Soda Fountain lives inside the historic Woolworth Walk building on Haywood Street, where local artists display their work and a nostalgic lunch counter keeps the old dime store spirit alive.

Sliding onto a stool feels like a trip back to the 1950s and 1960s. Fountain shakes come big, and the ice cream sodas are a fizzy treat worth ordering at least once.

Classic sandwiches, including a hearty club, round out the menu with generous portions.

Plan around the hours, which run 11 AM to 5 PM most days and close an hour earlier on Sunday. Weekend afternoons draw a crowd, and street parking downtown can be tricky.

A weekday morning visit after a walk through the galleries is a smart move.

4. Soda Shop, Davidson, NC

Since 1951, this little shop on Davidson’s Main Street has been feeding students, families, and anyone lucky enough to wander by. The college town setting gives it a cheerful energy, and the old-school counter remains the heart of the room.

Hand spun milkshakes are the signature here, classic and fresh. Burgers, cottage fries, and French toast keep the menu simple and friendly on the wallet.

Breakfast starts at 8 AM on weekends, so a shake with pancakes is totally fair game.

One quick tip: the shop closes on Tuesdays. Otherwise, it stays open until 8 PM, perfect for an after-dinner treat following a walk around Lake Norman or the Davidson College campus.

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating, too.

Orangeade is the word to remember at Brown-Gardiner. This neighborhood drugstore and soda fountain on North Elm Street in Greensboro makes its own, and it tastes like sunshine in a glass.

Of course, the milkshakes earn plenty of love too. The lunch counter serves old-school drugstore fare, from sandwiches and burgers to homemade pimento cheese, with tacos showing up as a special on some days.

Prices stay wonderfully low, often under ten dollars a person.

Get here early. Breakfast starts at 8 AM, and the counter closes by mid-afternoon, around 2:30 PM on weekdays and 2 PM on Saturday.

It stays closed on Sundays, so make it a Saturday morning stop before exploring the city.

Carolina blue memorabilia covers the walls, and the grill never seems to rest. Sutton’s Drug Store has been a Franklin Street fixture for generations, blending a hometown pharmacy with a busy lunch counter in downtown Chapel Hill.

Shakes pair perfectly with piping hot cheeseburgers, fries, and potato munchers. The menu goes deeper with a Tar Heel Turkey Sandwich, piles of pastrami, a patty melt, and hot dogs that win fans fast.

Mornings bring pancakes and French toast.

Before you leave, browse the shelves of vintage bottled sodas and hard-to-find candy. The counter runs from 7 AM to 2:30 PM, opening at 9 AM on Sunday.

Parking downtown takes some hunting, so walking from a garage is easiest.

7. Smith’s Drugs of Forest City, Inc., Forest City, NC

Holiday lights make Forest City famous each winter, but the soda fountain inside Smith’s Drugs is a year-round reason to visit. This cozy counter sits in a working drug store along Main Street in the town’s historic district.

Shakes and fountain drinks are the stars, mixed right at the counter in true old-style fashion. The food gets plenty of praise as well, making it an easy lunch stop.

There is also a souvenir shop to browse while you wait.

Visiting during the Christmas light season? Pair a shake with a stroll through the glowing downtown for a perfect winter evening.

The store opens at 7:30 AM and closes at 4 PM on Saturdays, so plan accordingly, and be patient at the fountain on busy days.
