Visitors landing in Mexico City International Airport (MEX) looking to rent a car have many options. There are 13 different car rental companies within MEX and several others outside the airport. A few words about where to find car rental offices. Unlike many other airports, there is no central car rental area at MEX, and the kiosks are spread out all over the airport. Enterprise, National, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, EZ Rent-A-Car, Alamo, Mex Rent A Car, Dollar and Thrifty are all located on the ground floor of the main concourse of Terminal 1. The Terminal 1 pickup and dropoff area for most MEX car rental companies is located just outside on Calle Sonora, but you’ll have to take a shuttle to get there.
If you’re arriving at Terminal 2, Sixt, Hertz, Alamo, Dollar, Avis and Europcar are your closest options, or you can take the SkyTrain (“Aérotren,” open 5am-11pm) to Terminal 1 for more choices.
To determine the best car rental companies in each category, TravelMag.com researched prices, car choices and customer feedback. Here are our top picks:
Sixt is the low price leader at MEX, with many cheap car rentals in all car classes. There are cheaper options, such as Mex Rent-A-Car, but Sixt combines low prices with good customer service and selection. Sixt received the best overall and best value for money ratings of any MEX car rental company based on customer reviews. Located on the ground floor of the main concourse of Terminal 1 and in the national arrivals area of Terminal 2, Sixt is easy to find as well as affordable.
Travelers looking to take the family on a road trip can do no better than America Car Rental. America Car Rental has many affordable minivans, SUVs and five-seaters in its fleet and provides baby car seat rental for $8 USD per day. You also get 10% off admission at all Xelha, Xplor, Xichen and Xoximilco adventure parks. There is an America kiosk in the Courtyard Marriott across the Skywalk on the second floor of the main concourse of Terminal 1. America Car Rental has offices in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Juarez, Tulum, Monterrey, Riviera Maya, Merida and Los Cabos, so if you’re planning a road trip along the Caribbean coast, there are plenty of dropoff locations along the way.
Hertz and Avis nearly tied when it came to the best car rental company for luxury travelers in Mexico City International Airport. With a fleet of luxury rental cars including the latest models of BMWs and Chryslers as well as Chevy Chargers and Suburbans, luxury travelers have plenty of choices. Hertz has offices in both Terminal 1 and 2, so it’s easy to find. Reviewers remarked on the ease with which Hertz accepts third-party insurance coverage from foreign credit cards, which is somewhat uncommon for Mexican car rental outfits. Ranked second-only to Sixt, Hertz is a luxury traveler’s best bet for a high-end ride out of Mexico City International Airport.
