Visitors to the Bavarian capital of Munich in southeastern Germany are catered for by a total of six car hire companies located at the city’s international airport. Despite being a relatively small city, hiring a car in Munich is a popular choice for those keen to explore beyond the city during their stay. Some of Bavaria’s finest attractions, such as the fairy tale-like Neuschwanstein Castle can be easily reached by car, with some dramatic scenery to enjoy along the way.

Car hire is made simple at Munich Airport. Alamo, Europcar, Avis, Enterprise, Budget and National can all be found at a dedicated Car Rental Center located just outside the airport terminal, opposite the parking area P26 and north of P9. All of these companies offer optional extras and adaptions for their vehicles, , including child seats, satellite navigation systems and hand controls for disabled people.
Our car rental company search results
As one of Europe’s most visited cities, it is no surprise that Munich Airport offers an excellent choice of car hire companies, with something to suit every taste and price range. To help you make your choose, the team at TravelMag.com have researched all six companies located at the airport and split the results into three categories – Best value, Best for families and Best for luxury cars. You’ll see our conclusions below.
Following a number of searches for cheap car hire at Munich Airport, we soon found a stand-out candidate in this category, with Alamo delivering the best value. Not only do they offer excellent rates, but they also come with equally impressive customer reviews for overall service. Many point in particular to the fact that all their paperwork was ready to go as soon as they arrived at the rental desk. Additionally, their sheer choice of cars also means there’ll be something for everyone. Alamo’s opening hours at the airport are 7am to 11pm every day of the week.
With the mid-size Opel Insignia available for just £170 a week during peak season, we award Enterprise the title of the best company for families visiting Munich. With such a spacious car, you won’t need to worry about excess luggage fitting in the boot – you’ll have all the room you need. Enterprise also operate slightly more favourable opening hours than some of their competitors too, with their rental desk at Munich Airport open from 6.30am to 11.30pm daily.
Sixt offers a superb choice of luxury car hire and sports cars at Munich Airport – though you’ll have to pay a premium for the privilege. If you fancy a SUV, then you can opt for the BMW X3, or if you’d prefer something a little lower and sportier, then what about the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible, perfect for cruising along Bavaria’s open roads? Sixt also offer 24-hour self-service pickup and return, enabling you to have maximum flexibility with your travel plans, as well as an Express Counter service, so you can be on your way even more quickly. Their rental desk is open from 5.30am to 12pm.
