Named among the world’s best bars, Thunderbolt blends laid-back Los Angeles energy with a deeply-held passion for mixology.

Set where Historic Filipinotown blurs into Echo Park and edges toward Downtown LA, Thunderbolt has carved out a niche as a bar that’s relaxed on the surface but inconspicuously obsessive underneath.

The space itself exudes a distinctive Southern California look, with an open-front patio, flashes of soft pink against dark green walls, orange stools and worn-in leather seating. In short, it’s the kind of place that draws you in for “just one drink” but all too often ends up keeping you longer than planned.

That chilled out mood conceals just how much work goes into what is poured so expertly into each glass. To put it bluntly, Thunderbolt treats cocktails with something akin to a scientific focus, using centrifuges, high-pressure nitrous and other lab-style tools to give your drink as much flavour as can be humanly achieved. Perennial favourites include the Jackfruit Thunderbolt, built on Oaxacan and Jamaican rums, with an added injection of subtle East Asian notes.

Elsewhere, the menu moves between house cocktails, canned options for easy sipping, bottles of wine and a Madeira list that turns the spotlight on the bar staff’s deep-seated knowledge.

Food plays an important role here, too. Southern-inspired dishes are served all day, with comforting options like fluffy buttermilk biscuits offered alongside Momma Leah’s chicken drumettes. The kitchen pedigree shines through, but it never distracts from the drinks, which always remain the main event.

Thunderbolt’s reputation extends far beyond its food, drink and welcoming ambiance. Sustainability is integral to how the bar operates, with careful sourcing and crediting of independent producers alongside significant waste reduction and local community initiatives – the latter earning it the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award in 2025.

Add in the lively patio, well put-together playlists and a crowd that mixes locals with cocktail pilgrims, and Thunderbolt comes across as something rare: a technically ambitious bar that is still eminently easy to love.
