There is nowhere quite like Mumbai. The city has many faces, including one of the world’s biggest contrasts of human existence from rich to poor. But it is also one of the most remarkable examples of what humanity can achieve; something that is visible in the historic monuments and hotels dotted all across the city. Some of the most luxurious hotels on the Indian subcontinent can be found in Mumbai; hotels that are renowned worldwide.
Mumbai is a big city and there are hundreds of hotels to choose from, therefore here at TravelMag we have waded through the dross to present to you five of Mumbai’s best 5-star hotels. Considerations include, but are not limited to, the location of the hotel, quality of the facilities, extras provided to guests and the value for money.
Privates from $285/ night
No other hotel in Mumbai is quite as iconic as the Taj Mahal Palace. Based on the location alone it is one of the best hotels in the city, situated right in the heart of the Colaba District by the waterfront, with a lovely plaza out front. The hotel was built in 1903 and is imbued with a majestic elegance throughout, from the marble ensuite bathrooms to the butler service provided to each room. It would be impossible to list all the facilities available to guests here, but highlights include ten separate dining options, two pools and a spa and wellness centre.
Privates from $200/ night
There are in fact a number of Taj properties across the city, all of which receive the highest accolades of any hotel in Mumbai, and the Taj Mahal Tower is one of the most revered. It is actually an extension to the Taj Mahal Palace, built in 1973, and while it shares many of the amenities with its sister property, the rooms here are better value and more modern. Fusing European and Indian décor, the rooms come equipped with many amenities, including a laptop safe, air conditioning, free toiletries, kettle, minibar and most room tariffs include a highly recommended breakfast.
Privates from $123/ night
The major benefit of the Grand Hyatt Mumbai’s location is its proximity to Mumbai International Airport. Delve inside this hotel however and there are plenty more boons to a stay with this respected chain’s Mumbai branch, such as the fitness centre and outdoor pool, or the air conditioned rooms with free wifi throughout. Rooms also contain flat-screen TVs, kettles, laptop safes and little extras like irons, hairdryers and free toiletries to make your stay more comfortable.
Privates from $304/ night
The Oberoi in Mumbai deals in grandiosity, tinged with colour and modernity. Large windows in the rooms let in plenty of light during the day, and the wooden floors and air conditioning ensure the room is kept at an ideal temperature. Besides this, rooms come with a deposit box, sofa, desk and free toiletries, among other things. Previous guests have been especially vocal about the high levels of cleanliness and comfort here in recent months. The hotel’s location isn’t bad either; right in the Central Business District on Nariman Point.
Privates from $173/ night
Neighbouring the Oberoi is another 5-star hotel that will make your money go that bit further. Although not quite as splendorous as its neighbour, the hotel duly earns every one of its five stars. Many of the general facilities expected at this level can be found at the Trident Nariman, including a tour and ticketing desk for your entertainment needs, a gym and spa for your health needs and a cosy, soundproofed room with a sofa, flat-screen TV and minibar for your comfort needs.
