7 Pennsylvania Smokehouses Where Smoked Meats Are Still a Specialty

Wood smoke drifting over a small-town street in Pennsylvania is the best kind of road sign. I followed that scent more than once and ended up in plain little shops that turned out to be some of the most delicious stops I have ever made.

These smokehouses and butcher counters still cure, smoke, and slice meats the slow, old-fashioned way. Bring a cooler and an empty stomach, because these seven spots are worth the drive.

1. Seltzer’s Smokehouse Meats Store, Palmyra, PA

Since 1902, the folks behind Seltzer’s have been turning out all-beef Lebanon Bologna the slow way, over real wood fires. Four generations later, the family still runs the show from Palmyra.

Few food traditions in Pennsylvania can claim that kind of staying power.

The store sits right at the source, so shelves stay stocked with bologna, snack sticks, jerky, deli meats, and gift boxes. You will even find smoked coffee and Seltzer’s merchandise.

Some products here are hard to track down anywhere else, and the garlic ring bologna is a must.

Guided smokehouse tours are the real treat. Guests walk past a row of 12 smokehouses, help feed the fire, and sample bologna fresh from the smoker.

The store is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday morning tends to be the calmest time to stop by. Parking is free.

2. Dietrich’s Meats & Country Store, Lenhartsville, PA

Sweet bologna, summer sausage, and a jar of pickled chow chow make one of the happiest grocery bags in Berks County. Dietrich’s is a traditional butcher shop on Old U.S. 22, and smoked meats sit right at the center of its counter.

Expect a wide spread of fresh and smoked cuts rooted in Pennsylvania Dutch habits. Fans swear the quality of the sweet bologna is tough to match.

Grab a jar of chow chow while you are at it for a tangy side.

Hours are generous, with doors open seven days a week. Saturdays bring the biggest crowds, so a weekday stop is easier.

It works well as a quick detour on a drive through the Hawk Mountain area.

3. Hawk’s Market & Smokehouse, LLC, Hydetown, PA

Ham loaf might not sound glamorous, but in northwest Pennsylvania it is practically a love language. Hawk’s Market slices it fresh, right beside rings of bologna and chunks of smoked Colby cheese.

Part hometown grocery and part smokehouse, Hawk’s makes its smoked meats and cheeses on site. A half pound of ham loaf, a small bologna ring, and a wedge of cheese add up to a perfect picnic near Oil Creek.

Simple, smoky, and honest.

Plan around the schedule. The market is closed Mondays, open 8 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Friday, with shorter hours on Saturday and Sunday.

4. Stoltzfus Meats, Intercourse, PA

Lancaster County shoppers have trusted this family-run Dutch deli since 1954. Stoltzfus Meats stocks locally raised meats, and the sausage selection alone could fill an afternoon.

Shelves overflow with meat sticks, cheeses, and bakery treats made in the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. A small eatery inside lets you taste before you load up the cooler.

Vegan salads are on hand too, which helps when the group has mixed appetites.

Doors open early, at 6 AM on weekdays, and the shop closes on Sundays. Saturdays get busy, so a weekday morning is smart.

Pair the stop with a stroll through Intercourse’s quilt and craft shops.

5. Weaver’s of Wellsville, Wellsville, PA

Small towns often keep their best secrets behind a butcher counter. Wellsville, in quiet northern York County, keeps one at Weaver’s.

The shop pairs quality fresh meats with specialty smoked items, and it stays clean and welcoming. Locals watch for the weekly sales, which make stocking up for cookouts easy on the wallet.

Weaver’s is open weekdays from 7 AM to 6 PM and Saturday mornings until 2 PM. Friday afternoons and Saturdays are the busiest windows.

It is a quick, rewarding stop on a back-roads drive toward Pinchot State Park.

6. Groff’s Meats, Elizabethtown, PA

Forty-plus years of farm-to-table freshness is a pretty good résumé. Groff’s Meats has built that reputation on Market Street in downtown Elizabethtown by leaning on Pennsylvania’s strong livestock farms.

Smoked sausage is the headliner here, made with traditional butchering methods. A solid lineup of quality cuts and assorted cheeses rounds out the case.

Toss a few links on the grill and you will see why regulars keep returning.

Hours run 7:30 AM to 6 PM on weekdays, a bit shorter on Saturday, and the shop closes Sunday. Saturday afternoon draws the biggest crowd.

Combine your visit with a walk around the town square.

7. Cunningham Meats, Indiana, PA

Meaty smoked ham hocks are the secret to a great pot of bean soup, and western Pennsylvania cooks know exactly where to find them. Cunningham Meats, just outside Indiana, keeps them stocked.

This locally owned shop smokes specialty items in house. Shoppers rave about the bacon, kielbasa, steaks, all-beef skinless wieners, chicken, and sausages.

Catering and in-store pickup make it handy for big family gatherings too.

The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sundays and Mondays. Saturdays are busiest, so try a weekday.

A cool autumn day trip through Indiana County, with ham hocks in the cooler, makes a pretty perfect finish to this smoky tour.
